HUCHEN FISH

HUCHEN FISH Huchen fish are huge and fierce fish that live in lakes. Huchen are also called the king of lake fish. They are also known as the Sakhalin Taimen, Japan's largest freshwater fish. These fish are similar in shape to the Atlantic Salmon. The scales are a lot smaller than those of a trout and salmon.
Huchen are very rare fish. It can be caught only at Sunny Lake on any day after it rains in any season apart from winter when the lake is frozen.
Characteristics Huchen fish are dark brown or dark violet on the back, reddish on sides while the lower parts of the body is silver. The body surface is covered in minute dark spots. Their body though slender is nearly round in cross-section. On the red dish brown back are several dark patches in an X or cres cent shape. Huchen fish lay their eggs in clean gravel where the water is shallow and well oxygenated. The fe male will dig the hole and the eggs are laid, fertilised and then covered up. The young when they are hatched have a large yolk sac. Once the sac is gone it will start to feed on tiny crus taceans. At this point they start to grow fast and they become predators. At first the young fish travel and feed in shoals. Once they are older they become solitary feeders, where they will take up feeding positions in weirs and deep holes in the riverbeds.
Size Huchen grows very quick ly and weigh 25-30 kg.
Feeding habits Huchen feed in the sea during the winter and move into the rivers in the spring and summer to breed. Young Huchen feed mainly on aquatic insects.

Older fish, larger than 30 cm, hunt and eat other fish. The really big ones may also eat mice, frogs and even snakes. Smaller fish feed on the larvae of water insects or on insects dropped into the water.
Habitat Huchen are found in Danube river, Siberia and Japan. Usually solitary, they often inhabit deeper regions of swift flowing streams with oxygen rich waters. Huchen live exclusively in fresh water and will swim upstream from lakes that they occupy in order to breed.
Lifespan Huchen survive for about 15 years.
