Brief rain, hailstorm lash Valley

Kathmandu Valley today evening received a brief rainfall accompanied by hailstones. It was fol- lowed by flashes of light- ening and thunderstorm.
"This type of temporary and sudden hailstones occurs during the pre- monsoon season, usually between March and May due mainly to the small thunder cloud," said Ra- jendra Shrestha, Senior Meteorologist at the Me- teorology Forecasting Di- vision (MFD).According to Shrestha, the hailstones is usually received in the hilly areas and especially in the af- ternoon and evening time. "The pre-monsoon season is the long dry season and this type of hailstones accompanied by outburst of rain is re- ceived in small areas and has very short duration, "added Shrestha.
However, the amount of rainfall and hailstones recorded were not made available.
"The hailstones were received at late evening and we don't have the system to get the instant data of the rainfall as our system only provides 24 hours data at once," maintained Shrestha.
Shrestha also clarified that the situation will not last longer except for a sporadic outburst of rain here and there. "There is no need to panic. This type of phenomenon is not due to the change in weather patterns.
