CARDINAL FISH
C l ardinal fish are the ittle fish with the big eyes. They are named for their brilliant red to light pink colours. Most cardinal fish remain small, growing to not more than two inches and several species are quite colourful and decorated with stripes and spots. There are around 200 species of cardinal fish with most living in shallow reef areas. One species is found in the Caribbean has been known when threatened by a preda- tor to take cover inside conch shells. They are gener- ally found in groups among coral reefs around the world.
Characteristics Some species of cardinal fish comes in colours like greenish, yellow-brown, sil- ver, black to pink. Cardinal Fish have a silver body with vertical black stripes. Their body is covered in small white spots that are more easily seen on the dorsal, pelvic, anal and caudal fins.
They have a large head and eyes, with an angled mouth that causes the lower part to protrude slightly. In most cases the teeth are small lin- ing the jaws and gums, but some cardinal fish have longer grasping teeth. They have two dorsal fins that are longer than the size of their body as well as an anal fin with only two spiny rays. One of the interesting characteristics of cardinal fish is that they are mouth brooders. After spawning takes place, the male will collect the eggs in his mouth. After the eggs hatch he will continue to hold the fry for a period of several weeks. When he finally re- leases the babies, they are large enough to be feed.
Size In average, the size of car- dinal fish is two inches in length. While some species reach an average length of around seven inches. Feeding habits Cardinal fish will eat all types of food such as brine shrimps, bloodworms, small fish and crustaceans. Being nocturnal creatures, they hide in caves during the day and come out to feed at night. Their large eyes help them to locate small crus- taceans and fish in the dark.
Habitat Cardinal fish can be easily found among the coral reefs in shallow water areas. The majority of these fish can be found inhabiting the waters of the Indo-Pacific but some species prefer brackish water areas while others only in- habit fresh water. Some species also live in New Guinea throughout the Lorentz River and Caribbean.
Lifespan Cardinal fish live for about three to five years.
Giant George is tallest dog
AGreat Dane from America has officially been named as the tallest dog ever. He is called Giant George and has made it into the record books for being a massive 109cm tall.
George was measured by the Guinness World Records team who say that beat his nearest rival by nearly two centimetres.
George's owner David says the four-year-old dog is so big that he has to sleep on his own queen-sized bed inside the house. George gets through 110lb of dog food a month. And on a recent plane trip in America, George was given a row of three seats to him- self. But he was so popular it caused a bit of a problem
